Leavenworth, Kansas, is in, and is the county seat of, Leavenworth County. On the western bank of the Missouri River, Leavenworth is the largest city in the Kansas City, Missouri, Metropolitan Statistical Area with a population of 34,759 (U.S. Census Bureau 2009 est.). Leavenworth City proper has a land area of 23.5 square miles.
Colonel Henry Leavenworth established an Army post in 1827, slightly north of present-day Leavenworth. The Leavenworth Federal Prison is famous, as is the military’s maximum security prison, the United States Disciplinary Barracks known as Fort Leavenworth. The Kansas State Penitentiary System has one of its largest facilities there as well as a medium-security state facility, and the city and county jails.
