Lenexa, Kansas, is in central Johnson County, in the northeastern portion of the state. As a suburb of Kansas City, Missouri, Lenexa is bordered by the cities of Shawnee, Overland Park, De Soto, and Olathe. Lenexa, with the rest of Johnson County, has experienced rapid growth over the past several decades. Lenexa’s population of 45,704 (US Census Bureau 2009 estimate) is well-educated (95% of Lenexa’s residents have graduated from high school and 51% hold a bachelor’s degree or higher).

Established in 1869 but not incorporated until 1907, Lenexa, Kansas, was settled by German, Swiss, and Belgian families who grew bumper crops in the fertile soil. Known as the City of Festivals, Lenexa, KS, hosts numerous festivals and events each year, including the Spinach Festival which celebrates Lenexa’s claim to fame as the “Spinach Capital of the World.” The Legler Barn Museum houses the history of the city of Lenexa and the surrounding communities.

Lenexa, Kansas, is at the crossroads of four major highways: Interstate 35, Interstate 435, US Highway 69, and Kansas State Highway 10. The Lenexa Chamber of Commerce states Lenexa’s major employers include transportation and distribution-based companies such as UPS and the J.C. Penney Logistics Center. Lenexa’s largest employers in the city are UPS, J.C. Penney, Quest Diagnostics, and Freightquote.com. The average commute for a Johnson County resident is 20 minutes; the average commute for many Lenexa residents is even less, as several major Johnson County employers are located in Lenexa, Kansas.

Lenexa-based Bats Global Markets, an international stock exchange market and the third-largest exchange operator in the United States after the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq, is also one of the city’s major employers.

The Kansas City Star (April 2011 article) reports the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 7 headquarters is leaving downtown Kansas City for Lenexa. The EPA, employing 600 persons, will occupy the green building originally built for Applebee’s.

As the county seat of Johnson County, KS, Olathe houses the majority of the Johnson County government buildings such as the Johnson County Courthouse.
