1 Child Killed; 45 Injured: What You Need to Know About Charter Bus Accidents

Early Monday morning (December 3rd) a charter bus carrying a youth all-star football team from Memphis, Tennessee skidded off an Arkansas highway and overturned.

The bus was carrying at least 45 passengers, most of them children ages 8-13. The driver, who survived the accident, told the Arkansas State Police that she lost control on Interstate 30.

The youth football team was traveling home from a weekend spent in Dallas, Texas at a tournament. Just hours before the charter bus overturned the team played in the championship game. Still, about 160 miles away from their homes in Memphis, the injured children, coaches, and chaperones were either taken to Arkansas Children’s Hospital in Little Rock or Saline Memorial Hospital in Benton.

While the rest of the passengers are expected to make a full recovery, unfortunately, one child did not survive.

Bus crashes are a distressing experience for everyone – especially for minors who might not know what is happening. Most charter bus accidents are absolutely preventable; in fact, human error is involved in about 90% of all crashes. If you or someone you know suffers death or even an injury, the responsible party must be held accountable.

Because the interior of charter buses is usually spacious, a bus carries potential significant harm when getting in an accident.

Common Injuries Experienced:

  • Brain Injury
  • Other Head and Neck Injury
  • Wrongful Death
  • Whiplash
  • Internal Injuries
  • Fractures such as broken wrists, arms, hips, or legs

Because buses are commercial vehicles, the driver must follow more rigorous guidelines than the average driver. After all, they are typically carrying a mass amount of people and therefore are responsible for their safety.

However, charter buses are usually owned by companies or local governments, so filing an injury claim can be challenging – it is important to reach out to an attorney fast and with as much information as you can provide.
