What Is Toxic Exposure?
Toxic exposure refers to people coming into direct or indirect contact with harmful substances, such as chemicals, that can cause injury, illness, or death.
Toxic exposure can occur in several ways:
- Inhalation: Inhalation, or breathing in harmful substances, is the most common form of toxic exposure.
- Ingestion: Ingestion occurs when a person accidentally or intentionally consumes a toxic substance.
- Direct Contact: Touching a toxic substance, whether intentionally or unintentionally, can lead to serious harm.
Toxic exposure commonly occurs in the workplace. For example, construction workers may be required to dismantle old buildings that contain asbestos, putting them at risk of breathing in tiny, microscopic asbestos fibers. This can lead to various medical conditions, such as asbestosis and mesothelioma, a deadly form of cancer.
Toxic exposure can also happen outside the workplace. If a manufacturing plant dumps harmful chemicals into a nearby waterway, those chemicals can enter the soil and other waterways that supply drinking water to nearby areas. This can cause entire communities to suffer the consequences of harmful exposure.
Common Types of Toxic Substances
There is a wide variety of naturally occurring and manmade substances that can cause significant harm to humans. In many cases, being exposed to these substances can result in severe injury, life-changing medical conditions, and even deadly illnesses.
Some of the most common toxic substances include:
- Lead
- Asbestos
- Pesticides
- Herbicides/weedkillers
- Mercury
- Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS)
- Air pollutants
- Water contaminants
- Arsenic
- Benzine
Some substances that are not generally toxic may be hazardous for humans in large doses. In other cases, substances that are meant to help humans—such as pharmaceutical drugs—could become harmful if they are defective, excessively dangerous, or are not taken/administered correctly.
Medical Conditions Associated with Toxic Exposure
Certain medical conditions are commonly associated with exposure to various toxic substances.
Examples include:
- Asbestosis
- Mesothelioma
- Hodgkin’s disease
- Parkinson’s disease
- Asthma
- Respiratory illness
- Skin diseases
- Cancer
While these and other medical conditions are frequently caused by toxic exposure, they may also result from other factors. To prove a toxic exposure case, you must not only prove that you suffered an injury, illness, or medical condition commonly associated with toxic exposure but also that you were actually exposed to a harmful substance. You must also prove that another person or party is responsible for the harmful exposure and, therefore, liable for your damages.

Wrongful Death $800,000
Partner Adam T. Funk secured an $800,000 settlement on behalf of a family for the wrongful death of their father. The father of five from Las Vegas, New Mexico was wheelchair-bound. While visiting his dentist’s office, the father maneuvered his electric wheelchair up a ramp. The ramp did not have a curb or rails to prevent a fall. Despite being airlifted to a hospital, the father died of his injuries.
